The climbers were doing the route 'Rock Idle' when one slipped and fell injuring his ankle. Due to the heavy overhang and rough rocks, neither the rescue helicopter nor the lifeboat could get close. Tenby team sent a cliff person down and placed the casualty into a lifejacket then floated hi through the sea to a point where the Inshore Lifeboat could reach the casualty. The horse was not extricable in the failing light and it was decided to leave it food and water as it was not badly hurt and re-asses extrication methods the next day with the preference being a helicopter lift if possible. Allegedly the incident had happened the previous weekend and CG had only just been informed by the police as a request to check out whether anyone was in the vehicle. Due to tides SGS IRT managed to investigate the remains along with the Dyfed Poys Police Marine Unit at lunchtime today. After some digging in the sand the car was cleared for occupants and it was confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen the previous weekend and so had just been dumped over the cliff. ]]> Sat May 7 2005 St Govans/Tenby Call - Huntsman's Leap http://photos.tenbycoastguard.co.uk/c523237.html At approximately 1630hrs whilst out on routine patrol, SGS Mobile was tasked to support a medical emergency at St Govans Chapel carpark where Helimed 57A (Welsh Air Ambulance South) had been tasked. Upon arrival on scene, SGS Mobile plus three additional team members cleared a landing zone for the helo and estalished from a land ambulance on scene that the casualty had been injured in a 30 feet fall whilst climbing half a mile to the west of the car park. The party had remained climbing whilst the injured climber and one other (first informant) made their way up the cliffs and to the car park. Once the casualty had been packaged and the helo departed for the local casualty unit, SGS Mobile took the first informant back to where the climbing party was located to provide safety advice and ascertain what had happened. After a short duration the party leader topped out and in discussion informed us that there was a further casualty at the base of the cliffs. At this point a full scale cliff rescue was initiated with SGS CRT, Castlemartin IRT, elements of TBY CRT and Manorbier IRT (who were dealing with a medical emergency in Tenby at the same time) plus land ambulance and Rescue 169 (who had been attending a cliff fall on the Gower with Rhossilli CRT). A cliffman was lowered who established that the casualty was 15yrs old and had suffered head lacerations. Due to the fact the casualty had been on the cliff face for over 2 hours the casualty was winched by Rescue 169 and later was taken to hospital by land ambulance for further checks. These incidents were very serious but could easily have had a far more devestating outcome; never be concerned about calling 999 and requesting the emergency services. Also if anyone suffers a head or back injury do not move them unless they are in further danger and call for emergency service backup. Upon arriving at the scene and identifying the first informant, the beach was secured prior to a search. The initial search didn't yield the suspect ordnance but on the third sweep the ordnance was discovered having been kindly moved by one of the first informants dogs further towards the waters edge. The suspect ordnance was identified as a maroon which had only partially fired. It is not known whether the blind was discarded in situ or had washed in but judging by the state of the mechanism it is presumed washed up. If you find any suspicious objects along the coast do not hesitate the call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. If you need to dispose of old flares please contact your local Coastguard station who will arrange for its safe disposal. Items such as these are lethal in the wrong hands. Upon reaching the scene, the IRT ascertained the position and located the animal 20ft above the waterline and approx 80 ft below the clifftop wedged into a vertical cleft in the rock, in relatively good health. After discussing various options with Milford Haven MRSC, additional manpower and resource was requested from TBY CRT and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue who provided a pump tender and emergency tender to the scene. A vet supporting the RSPCA confirmed the animal fit to rescue and over a lengthy 6 hour operation the animal was brought back to the clifftop. ]]> Thu Oct 21 2004 Call-out Manorbier Beach Woman trampled by horse http://photos.tenbycoastguard.co.uk/c309634.html Tenby Team, supported by Manorbier IRT and a nearby member of the Saint Govans team were tasked to a woman reported trampled by a horse on Manorbier Beach. Manorbier IRT and Saint Govans 8 arrived first on scene and ascertained that the woman was able to walk to the waiting amblance. Graham Jones from Manorbier IRT went to the top of the cliffs to provide a communications relay for the team and the ambulance as Manorbier is a known comms blackspot. The ambulance reported that the woman had no breathng difficulties, which was relayed to ambulance control via Milford MRSC and after collecting the details of the casualty from Marie Jones of Manorbier IRT the Tenby team returned to the station. Graham Jones from Manorbier IRT went to the top of the cliffs to provide a communications relay for the team and the ambulance as Manorbier is a known comms blackspot. The ambulance reported that the woman had no breathng difficulties, which was relayed to ambulance control via Milford MRSC and after collecting the details of the casualty from Marie Jones of Manorbier IRT the Tenby team returned to the station.

All units remained on scene until further police and ambulance units and South Pembs Sector Manager arrived whereupon the casualty was secured and after a medical check was taken away by the police. The casualty was stabilised by paramedics and CG and medevaced, due to the difficulty of undertaking a CG extraction, by Rescue 169 to Withybush Casualty. At approximately 3.35 pm on Sunday, Milford Haven coastguard paged the Tenby coastguard rescue team (CRT) to assist an ambulance crew to evacuate the man from the Iron Bar area of the beach. Initially, ambulance control had requested coastguard assistance and tasked the air ambulance ‘Helimed 57A’, but on arrival of the rescue units at the scene, it was clear that the helicopter would not be required and it was stood down. The man, on holiday with his family from Caerleon, Gwent, was placed in the coastguard recovery stretcher and transported by the lifeguards’ quad-bike and trailer to the ambulance at the Fountains car park entrance to the beach, where it was decided by the family to return to their holiday accommodation and review the injury. Upon arrival of the initial CG units, an inflatable was seen to be making for the slipway and upon landing the occupants were interviewed and it was found that the mispers were these people. As the situation was resolved successfully all units were stood down, and safety advice given concerning appreciating the deteriorating weather conditions and light. Investigations as to the safety equipment carried revealed that the only flare carried was expiry dated to October 1977; this was removed for disposal. During a 35 minute period 6 people were rescued from the rip tide ranging from 6/7 yrs old up to 50 yrs old. The dangers of rip tides should not be underestimated. During the latter part of the afternoon Angle AWB was tasked to standoff in support of any incidents, which fortunately did not occur during this watch, and at 1600hrs all units were stood down and returned to station. Moments after completing the paperwork on the afternoons incidents and closing down, SGS were retasked to Freshwater West after an 11yr old boy had dislocated his shoulder whilst using a boogie board in the surf. ]]> Sat Jul 24 2004 Call Out - Child stuck on cliffs Lydstep http://photos.tenbycoastguard.co.uk/c241456.html With the good weather on Saturday 24 July 2004, SGS mounted a patrol of the patch checking Freshwater East, West Angle Bay, Pembroke Dock, Freshwater East and Stackpole Quay. At approximately 1430hrs TBY CRT were tasked to Lydstep Haven to 2 children cutoff below steep cliffs. SGS Mobile was tasked by MRSC Milford Haven to support the rescue as well as TBY ILB. Due to the difficult terrain, TBY ILB was tasked to attempt a rescue of the children which was successful with the assistance of a local vessel surf-slapper, and all CG units relocated to the slipway at Lydstep to receive the casualties. As a precaution, one of the children after being checked over by ambulance staff from TBY, was taken to the local cottage hospital. TBY CRT and TBY ILB were immediately tasked to a further incident at TBY harbour (see next) whilst SGS Mobile was taskd to reports of jetskiers causing problems at Freshwater East. After taking details, the patrol was resumed. A land ambulance and Helimed 57A, the Welsh Air Ambulance were also in attendance along with CG South Pembs Sector Manager. A CG was lowered along with a paramedic to the casualty who was assessed then packaged for a cliff stretcher recovery assisted by a second CG. The casualty was then flown to casualty at Withybush. With this part of the incident complete, CG's then had to strop recovery 6 MOPs who were cragfast due to the slope and weather conditions, which were rapidly deteriorating into steady heavy rain. The call was relayed to Milford Haven MRSC who tasked TBY AWB, TBY ILB, local vessels such as the range safety boat and Rescue 169 to investigate. Investigations by the lifeboats revealed that the named boat was afloat but had not been in the vicinity of Caldey. Rescue 169 undertook a thorough overflight of Caldey and St Margarets islands befor being tasked to undertake a search from Caldey down the coastline to St Govans Head. No further reports of a vessel in difficulty were received and there is a high probability that this fruitless search costing significant sums of money and peoples time was a hoax. ]]> Mon Jul 19 2004 Saint Govans Call - Stranded dolphin http://photos.tenbycoastguard.co.uk/c232733.html At approximately 0845hrs on 2004 July 16, SGS IRT were tasked to Broadhaven South to assist RSPCA and animal welfare personnel from West Wales Marine Life Rescue in the recovery of a stranded dolphin. Upon arrival it was found that the dolphin had been returned to the water by a MOP. It can be seen from the beach photo that the dolphin, thought to be a Common or Atlantic Striped Dolphin, approx 6ft long, became stranded after coming too close to shore, possibly chasing fish up a small inlet in the sand. After details were taken all units were stood down. Due to the nature of the activity, its location and the number of people in a small area, MRSC Milford Haven tasked SGS Mobile to provide communications and safety watch at the event due to issues with the safety cover provided by the organisers. Other than a day old wasp sting and requests for directions to local amenities, the day passed off successfully. The task was complicated for the fire units by the large scale of the fire and the lack of immediate accessible water so additional water was ferried in via the bowser. Helimed 57A was tasked to the incident, but due to the nature of the injuries and status of the casualty it was decided to move him by land ambulance to Withybush A&amp;E. As the CG units were returning to station, Helimed 57A informed Milford Haven MRSC of a tasking to Angle for a child fallen on the beach. SGS IRT including the returning team member from Angle were tasked to the scene, but a few miles from Angle the call was determined to be a hoax. This hoax meant that valuable flight time was wasted for the Air Ambulance, which is run by donation, placed lives at risk as the helicopter may have been required elsewhere, and meant that members of CG had to leave their normal working days to deal with the incident. A lady had sustained an ankle injury when she was pulled over by her dogs. The lady was attended by ambulance staff and then recovered by coastguard vehicle to Stackpole Quay car park for the onward journey by ambulance. ]]> Sun May 2 2004 Saint Govans Call - MCA Falcon http://photos.tenbycoastguard.co.uk/c164110.html SGS CG were called out on Sunday 25 April late afternoon after a report was received by 999 of children stuck in mud at Hobbs Point, Pembroke Dock. Upon arrival at the scene SGS CG and MCA Falcon found 5 teenagers had self rescued to a nearby landing stage. As the team was mustering, a second sheep incident was reported at Trevallen Cliffs. On arrival at Trevallen Cliffs it was found that the sheep had fallen and were non recoverable. The team then moved to the initial sheep report and recovered the sheep after manouvering a cliffman along the cliff face. In the late afternoon SGS and Manorbier IRT were called to a 58yr old female who had sustained suspected lower leg injury whilst on the cliff path near Freshwater East in the same place as the photographs taken on May 7 2003 (lower down). The woman was made comfortable and then evacuated to a waiting ambulance in adjacent fields for onward transport to hospital. Rescue 169 RAF SAR Helicopter was tasked from exercise off Lundy along with Tenby ILB. By the time SGS located the casualties, they had been rescued by other surfers and returned to the beach where after a quick examination were returned to their party. On reaching the scene the craft was quickly identified and fishing vessel PE91, responding to a Channel 16 broadcast came alongside to shelter the craft. After 10 minutes, Angle AWB reached the scene, having been launched on service, and commenced a tow back to the Mackeral Stage at Milford Haven. After hauling the kit to a suitable location above the cliffs a direct lead was set up and Mark Rice was lowered to the stranded animal where after several failed attempts the animal was recovered unhurt to the clifftop and returned to the flock grazing above the army range. A late night search on Saturday evening was launched to find a distressed 30yr old local woman who was successfully recovered by a combined team from Tenby, Manorbier IRT and St Govans. The photos here show some of the activities that a joint patrol between Tenby and St Govans personnel undertook. The fun started just after lunch with a simultaneous callout to medical emergencies in Tenby and Pendine which were successfully resolved by Ambulance staff. The patrol was then involved in some filming for the Sector Manager before attending a personal watercrafts show at a local caravan park. The next shout was to an inflatable dinghy with 2 POB drifting on a strong ebb current off Giltar Point. The Tenby ILB was launched and searched down Giltar Cliffs towards Lydstep whilst the patrol checked the beach where it was discovered the casulaties had self-recovered to the beach. Finally the day ended with a search for a missing 13yr old male at Castle Beach in Tenby. Moments before the arrival of the CRV, the missing person was located so details were taken, the team stood down and the Sector Manager arrived to take further film of people, boats, coastguards and seagulls!!! It was noted however, that there were a large number of small inflatable dinghies were being used off the beach with people taking little regard of the tidal or wind conditions. These dinghies can be a major hazard if they are not properly secured to the beach as they can quickly be taken by tide and wind away from shore. His friends having lost sight of him in the darkness raised the alarm and a major search was instigated utilising full team resources from SGS and Dale plus the Angle AWB Lifeboat and Angle ILB and the Port Authority Pilot vessel. These assets were supplemented later in the morning by the Police boat Mike 66 and Police helicopter Oscar 99. Fortunately, the individual concerned later phoned Milford MRSC to confirm he was uninjured. The third callout came at 1300hrs after a vessel reported engine failure somewhere off the Castlemartin Range. SGS CG initiated a search for the casualty vessel from St Govans Head to East Blockhouse Point at Angle. This search involved members of Tenby and St Govans Coastguard, Tenby Police and Police 12 Helicopter, all of which were tasked to a search which appears to be a hoax. Deploying these resources costs large amounts of money and we cannot stress enough that it also <b>risks lives</b> as a real emergency may not be attended as quickly due to the deployment of the teams. Placing a hoax call is not funny, does not help anyone and will lead to prosecution if the culprit(s) are caught. After Fire & Rescue, Coastguard and stranded personnel had agreed that a mud rescue was risky, the stranded boat was monitored until a rescue could be affected 4 hours later on the incoming tide. Saturday 19 July 2003: Saint Govans callout to East Llanion where a 30ft boat had run aground on mud in Cosherston Pill, with 2 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs on board, on a falling tide.
